Pwy oedd Dewi Sant?
-
Who was Saint David?

Ganwyd Dewi Sant tua'r flwyddyn 500 yng Nghaerfai, De-orllewin Cymru, i deulu aristocrataidd.

-

Saint David was born around the year 500 in Caerfai, South-West Wales, into an aristocratic family.

Daeth Dewi Sant yn bregethwr enwog a sefydlodd ddwsin o fynachlogydd. Dilynodd ef a'i fynachod fywyd syml, llym. Roeddent yn arfer aredig y caeau â llaw ac yn ymatal rhag bwyta cig neu yfed cwrw.

Honnwyd bod Dewi Sant dim ond yn bwyta cennin a dim ond yn yfed dwr, efallai mai dyna pam y daeth y genhinen symbol cenedlaethol o Gymru.

-

Saint David became a renowned preacher and founded a dozen monasteries. Him and his monks followed a simple, austere life. They ploughed the fields by hand and refrained from eating meat or drinking beer.

St David himself was reputed to have consumed only leeks and water, which might be why the leek became a national symbol of Wales.

Bu farw Dewi Sant ar 1 Mawrth yn 589. Claddwyd ef ar safle Eglwys Gadeiriol Tyddewi. Ei eiriau olaf i'w ddilynwyr oedd: "Byddwch lawen a chadwch eich ffydd a'ch credd, a gwnewch y pethau bychain a glywsoch ac y welsoch gennyf i."

-

Saint David died on 1 March in 589. He was buried at the site of St Davids
Cathedral. His last words to his followers were: “Be joyful, keep the faith and belief, and do the little things that you have heard and seen me do.”

Mae'r ymadrodd "Gwnewch y pethau bychain mewn bywyd" - yn dal i fod yn ddywediad adnabyddus yng Nghymru.

-

The phrase “Gwnewch y pethau bychain mewn bywyd” - “Do the little things in life” - is still a well-known maxim in Wales.
